Viva Mexico! Celebrate Mes Patrio at La Zebra: Mexico’s Independence Day in Tulum

Every year, on the night of September 15, Mexico lights up to celebrate el Grito de Dolores, the historic moment that sparked the country’s independence movement. At La Zebra, nestled between the Mayan Jungle and the Caribbean shores of Tulum, we’ll be celebrating throughout the entire month (Mes Patrio) in the heart of the Riviera Maya. As the festivities approach, here’s a look at the significance of el Grito and how you can get involved in one of Mexico’s most important holidays with us.

What is El Grito de Dolores?

In the early hours of September 16, 1810, Miguel Hidalgo, a priest in the town of Dolores, Guanajuato, delivered an impassioned cry for freedom that ignited Mexico’s fight for independence from Spanish rule. Known as el Grito de Dolores, this pivotal moment marked the start of a decade-long struggle, ultimately leading to Mexico’s liberation in 1821. Today, Hidalgo’s call for justice and equality is commemorated across the country as a symbol of hope and national pride. It’s celebrated throughout Mexico for the entire month of September. The celebrations commence at midnight on September 15 with an exclamation of the phrase “¡Viva México!” to kick off the fiesta with fireworks, live music, and traditional dancing.
